Perks of the Season

Artichokes, Yea!
These lovelies can now be found at local grocery stores. We snapped these up at the south side King Soopers. Though, we are enjoying them so much as decor, that we keep forgetting to eat them!

Dragons

These Dragons were found perching in a curious spot. On U.S. 50 out in the Mesa in front of, and behind the Mi Ranchito restaurant. Very cool. Also, if you haven't tried their buffet, you need to head out there. It's very good, like a home cooked meal. On the Friday we were there, they had a magician roaming the crowd delighting the diners.

Seeing Green

We couldn't help notice all the green food we've been seeing lately. Surely a sign of St. Patrick's Day this weekend. What green food will you be eating?

Spent Grain Bread

We just happened into a private beer brewing session out in PW, from which it was suggested we
take the spent grains and try to make some bread. We couldn't wait to show the results. Perfectly browned with a "nutty" whole grain taste, these quickly become one of our favorites. You can see someone couldn't even wait for me to take the photo before breaking off a piece!

Fruitcake, schmoot-cake.

Mom does it best: A tradition passed down from my mom, and her mom, is making homemade potica.
On my wedding day the recipe was given to me on a kitchen recipe card. She named the recipe "My Favorite Potica Cake" The twist? Its actually 2 rolled up poticas layered on top of each other and baked in an angel food pan. Moister, more buttery, perfection. The only potica in my eyes!

In choosing a photo this morning, we were ready to post a nice one at the Union Depot, but, for some reason, with the scent of cinnamon and butter still lingering in the air,  this one got chosen.
Hmm.  The treats of the season. Pueblo certainly has its favorites.

Fruitcake, schmoo-tcake. Foods from diverse backgrounds are part of what make a Pueblo holiday special. We either  gotta make em' or buy em' but either way they are our staples till New Year's. Have you made your potica yet? Have you ordered your tamales? Can you still find cardones? Did you get your sugar cookies? Where's the pizzelle iron!? Better hurry!

What are some foods on your holiday must have list?

Scenes from the Weekend

We imagine this scene may look pretty familiar to a lot of you. Pueblo may be a city of diverse backgrounds but we come together on a lot of things and one of them is our love of the breakfast burrito! Rushing to weekend sports games, taking one to family members for breakfast and coffee or picking one up along the way of running errands, breakfast burrito lines are long on the weekends. Well, and during the week too! Here the Saturday line at Burrito's Betty runs out the door. As it usually does. And those who stop, know the line will be long at any given minute, so we just go with it and join in the conversations going on as we anxiously await our turn.

Editor's Note:
Though we do admit we have our favorite stops, nothing beats the homemade ones brought to our front door made by deal ol' dad. They are made with whatever whimsical ingredients he has that day, and we even rave that he can knock the top contenders off their throne, but mostly we suspect they are so good  because they are made with love!

Early Arugula and Butter

Arugula and butter lettuce curls. Lettuce flourishes in a spring garden. This is the perfect time to start your spring potager.
I know keeping my garden seeds in one big basket tends to mix things, however, I was surprised when my salad greens sprouted right next to our tulips! I noticed little curls coming right at the stem of the tulips that were a different color and shape than your normal weed, so I decided watch it and see what it might be. A few other tulips developed red arugula shaped leaves, so curiously I kept watching and watering. Before you know it we had a whole salad in our tulip bed! These crispy leaves did better than the lettuce box I planted in the actual potager. They flourished in the sun of a south facing bed, and we were treated to a garden fresh salad for dinner last night.

Pluck a few handfuls of greens, wash well, add wedges of Cherokee Purple Heirloom Tomatoes, onion slices and drizzle with balsamic vinegar, and a tiny dollop of blue cheese and there yo have it!

Cool Treats on a Windy Day

The heavy winds didn't keep EVERYONE inside. Downtown's restaurants, coffee shops and yogurt stops were bustling with kids enjoying Spring Break...

Agh! We lost the archives!

We'll re-post them randomly on weekends to get them back in the database.
Until then lets begin again in Feb!
